One of the principal activities of the Chartered Surveyors’ Company is to promote and assist with the education of young people:
“Within the resources of the Company and its individual members to promote the pursuit of excellence within the profession; to increase the awareness within the City of the role of Chartered Surveyors and help individuals with entry into the profession”.
The Education Committee stewards and coordinates a number of initiatives which the Company has created in the area of education. These include the Chartered Surveyors’ Bursaries (more below), Livery’s City Seminar, Schools’ Career Initiative, Toby Sutton Award and the Competitive Annual Award to students of the Guildhall School of Music, coupled with further education bursaries, mentoring and work experience opportunities.
The recently launched Chartered Surveyors’ Bursaries is an exciting new programme of real estate bursaries to help talented students from less advantaged and non-traditional backgrounds to enter the property industry. Students who are awarded the Bursary will each be supported by a property industry ‘Champion’, who will pay £10,000-a-year for three years to cover a student’s university living expenses. Additionally, they will offer them ongoing mentoring throughout their degree and as they enter the workplace.
The first five Champions to commit to funding Bursaries are international real estate consultancy Hollis, pan-European investor and asset manager M7 Real Estate, property developer Dunmore, fund manager Bridges Fund Management and international real estate services firm Cushman & Wakefield. The WCCS trialled the scheme last year, committing £150,000 to fund five students through their degrees. The students, some of whom were the first in their family to attend university, commenced their studies in October 2020 at universities including Nottingham Trent, Sheffield Hallam, Cambridge University, the University of Manchester and the University of Reading. The Company has fostered strong relationships with a number of schools – promoting careers in the property profession and an understanding of the workings of the City of London – but in particular four inner London schools: Robert Clack School, St Saviour’s & St Olave’s School, Archbishop Tenison’s School Academy, and Central Foundation Girls’ School.
