Charitable

In its short history, the Company has accumulated considerable charitable funds. The funds are held in Trust and administered by the Members of the Court sitting as Trustees. Day to day management is by independent investment advisors reporting to the Charitable Board appointed by the Trustees.

Income from the Charitable Funds is distributed in a number of areas:

  • Funds are given to external charities chosen by the Company's Charitable Board. Examples of charities supported in recent years include the Treloar Trust for disabled children, the Jubilee Sailing Trust and the Christchurch Youth & Community Centre at Spitalfields. Funds are also donated to the Company's “adopted” schools in connection with the schools sponsorship scheme initiated by our Educational Committee.

  • The Toby Sutton Research Award provides a sum up to £3,000 per annum which may be used, for example, to sponsor a major piece of research into a subject of topical interest to the property industry.

  • The Funds give annual support to The Guildhall School of Music and Drama by sponsoring a String Quartet competition and an annual bursary.

  • The Funds support the Lord Mayor's nominated charities.

  • Donations are made each year where particular requests are received to support students through University. Prizes are given to the best students on property-related courses at the main Universities.

  • The Company has affilliations and gives support by way of visits, prizes and donations; with the surveying/mapping branches of the three armed forces:

    135 Independent Geographic Squadron RE(V) based in Ewell in Surrey is responsible for producing maps for distribution to active units both in times of conflict and peace. Our association goes back to 1979;

    Number 7010 (VR) Photographic Interpretation Squadron, Royal Auxiliary Air Force; this Squadron is based at RAF Waddington and the Company's association was formed in October 1999. The Squadron's role is to provide operational imagery analysis to the Royal Air Force and the provision of strategic intelligence towards in-theatre support for tactical reconnaissance squadrons;

    The Comapny established links with HMS Herald, head of the RN survey fleet, in 1990 and following her decommissioning, formed an affiliation with her replacement, HMS Echo, in 2003.  HMS Echo is the 12th ship to bear her name and is a Survey Vessel (Hydrographic/Oceanographic) whose main role is the collection of environmental and bathymetric data for use in a multitude of military and civilian tasks.

Money for the Charitable Trust is raised from annual covenants, from monies raised from the City Seminar and the Property Marketing Awards. Funds are also raised from the annual Inter-Livery Swimathon which has been organised for many years by the Company.

The City Livery Rose

Rosa City LiveryLiverymen are reminded of the City Livery Rose which not only makes an excellent birthday or Christmas present but also generates funds for the Company's Charitable Trust. The brainchild of Delva Patman, Past Master of the Company, “City Livery” was launched at the Chelsea Flower Show 2000 with a presentation to the Right Hon. the Lord Mayor, the Lady Mayoress, Sheriffs and their Escorts. In 2002, a gift of 50 “City Livery” rose bushes was presented to Her Majesty the Queen in celebration of her Golden Jubilee. Both the Corporation of London and Birmingham City Council have also planted the roses in a number of public gardens. “City Livery” is produced by Harkness Roses, leading rose breeders and growers. It is clear sparkling lemon yellow in colour with an attractive apple perfume and mid green foliage. It is a rose which has the rare combination of soft and pastel shade that is also bright and sparkling. In bright sunlight it shines without dazzling, in dappled shade the colour is bright and lively. The clusters have up to nine flowers, which open in succession, giving a really long period of flower in both garden and vase. In trials for the last seven years there has been good disease resistance, and importantly for a pale shade, the petals withstand both rain and heat without notable damage.

Liverymen wishing to obtain supplies of “City Livery” should apply (mentioning the Livery connection) to:
